PEMF Medicine
Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy
Low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic field therapy that supports pain management, bone healing, and tissue regeneration through non-invasive electromagnetic stimulation.
What Is Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy?
Pulsed magnetic field therapy (PEMF) uses devices that generate low-frequency, low-intensity electromagnetic fields applied to the body. The electromagnetic pulses pass through tissue without being absorbed, inducing small electrical fields at the cellular level that influence biological processes.
PEMF therapy has been used in clinical medicine since the 1970s, particularly for bone healing. Modern applications extend to pain management, inflammation reduction, and general tissue regeneration. At St. George Hospital, PEMF is used as a supportive therapy within individualized treatment programs.

How Does It Work?
PEMF induces electrical fields within tissues that influence cell membrane voltage, calcium ion signaling, and gene expression. At the cellular level, these effects include increased production of nitric oxide (vasodilation), upregulation of heat shock proteins (cytoprotection), enhanced osteoblast activity (bone formation), and modulation of inflammatory cytokines.
The specific biological response depends on the frequency, intensity, and waveform of the electromagnetic field. Low-frequency fields (1-100 Hz) primarily affect cell membrane potential and calcium dynamics, while the pulsed nature of the signal provides periodic stimulation that avoids cellular habituation.
Conditions Treated
- Chronic pain
- Non-healing fractures and delayed union
- Osteoarthritis
- Post-surgical rehabilitation
- Soft tissue injuries
- Insomnia and sleep disturbances
- General wellness support
Could this belong in your plan?
That depends on your findings, not on the therapy. Send what you have with a short history; a physician reads it before the video call and tells you whether this treatment belongs in your program.
What a session feels like
- Before You lie on the treatment mat, or a local applicator is placed over the area. Clothes stay on.
- During 20–40 minutes. The field is silent and most people feel nothing at all; some report a mild warmth or tingling. It is completely non-invasive.
- Afterwards You get up and go. During an inpatient program sessions are usually daily.
Evidence & Safety
PEMF therapy has one of the strongest evidence bases among electromagnetic therapies. FDA-approved PEMF devices exist for bone healing (since 1991) and major depression. Clinical studies published in journals including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Pain Research and Management, and Bioelectromagnetics support its efficacy for fracture healing, osteoarthritis pain, and post-operative recovery. PEMF therapy is very safe with minimal contraindications beyond cardiac pacemakers and pregnancy.
