Integrative Oncology

A Different Approach to Cancer Treatment

For over four decades, St. George Hospital has pioneered integrative cancer treatment in Germany. We combine the best of conventional oncology with biological medicine, hyperthermia, and immune-based therapies to fight cancer while supporting the whole patient.

Our Philosophy

Integrative Oncology: Strengthening the Patient, Fighting the Tumor

Conventional cancer treatment focuses on destroying the tumor. Integrative oncology goes further: it simultaneously strengthens the patient’s immune system, reduces side effects, improves quality of life, and addresses the biological terrain that allowed cancer to develop.

At St. George Hospital, we do not replace conventional oncology. We complement it. Many of our patients receive our treatments alongside surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation administered by their primary oncologists. Others come to us when conventional options have been exhausted or when they seek a less toxic alternative.

Our founder, the late Dr. Friedrich Douwes, was among the first physicians in Europe to introduce hyperthermia, insulin-potentiated therapy (IPT), and photodynamic therapy into clinical oncology practice. Today, our oncology program is led by Dr. Martin Rößner (Chief Physician) and Dr. Frederick Götte (Specialist for Hematology and Oncology), with treatment protocols developed by Dr. Julian Douwes, our Chief Medical Officer.

Treatments & Cancer Types

Integrative Cancer Treatment

Our comprehensive approach to cancer treatment combining biological medicine, hyperthermia, immune therapy, and targeted conventional therapies.

Hyperthermia

Controlled heat therapy that damages cancer cells, enhances chemotherapy and radiation effectiveness, and stimulates anti-tumor immune responses.

IPT Chemotherapy

Insulin-potentiated therapy delivers chemotherapy at lower doses with potentially fewer side effects by exploiting cancer cells' metabolic vulnerabilities.

Prostate Cancer

Specialized integrative protocols for prostate cancer including prostate-specific hyperthermia, hormone optimization, and immune-based strategies.

Breast Cancer

Comprehensive integrative support for breast cancer patients at every stage, from early-stage complementary treatment to advanced recurrent disease.

Our Therapeutic Arsenal

Key Therapies in Integrative Oncology

Hyperthermia (Local & Whole-Body)

Heat-based therapy that selectively damages cancer cells, enhances chemotherapy uptake, and activates anti-tumor immune responses. We offer whole-body, local-regional, and prostate-specific hyperthermia systems.

IPT Low-Dose Chemotherapy

Insulin-potentiated therapy exploits cancer cells' high demand for glucose, delivering chemotherapy drugs more selectively at doses 75-90% lower than conventional protocols.

Immune Therapy

Dendritic cell therapy, thymus peptides, mistletoe (Viscum album), and natural killer cell stimulation strengthen the body's own anti-cancer immune surveillance.

ECT / Galvano Therapy

Electrochemical therapy uses low-level direct current to destroy tumor tissue. Particularly useful for accessible solid tumors and as an adjunct to other modalities.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Light-activated compounds selectively accumulate in tumor tissue and destroy cancer cells when exposed to specific wavelengths of light, with minimal damage to healthy tissue.

Detoxification & Nutritional Support

High-dose vitamin C infusions, liver support, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and targeted supplementation strengthen the body's resilience and support recovery during and after treatment.

Our Integrative Cancer Therapies

Whole-Body Hyperthermia

Controlled systemic heat therapy activates anti-tumor immune responses and enhances the effectiveness of other cancer treatments.

Local-Regional Hyperthermia

Focused heat therapy targets specific tumor regions, increasing chemotherapy and radiation sensitivity at the tumor site.

IPT Chemotherapy

Insulin-potentiated therapy delivers chemotherapy at lower doses with fewer side effects while maintaining treatment efficacy.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Light-activated compounds selectively target and destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy surrounding tissue.

Immune Therapy

Mistletoe therapy, dendritic cell therapy, and thymus peptides strengthen the body's natural immune defense against cancer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Integrative Oncology

No. We do not replace conventional cancer treatment. Our integrative oncology program is designed to complement and enhance conventional approaches such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Many of our patients receive our treatments alongside their conventional oncology care. For patients who have exhausted conventional options, we offer biological therapies as an alternative pathway.

We treat a broad range of cancer types including prostate, breast, colorectal, pancreatic, lung, ovarian, and others. Our integrative approach is applicable to most solid tumors and some hematological malignancies. During your initial consultation, our oncology team will assess whether our program is appropriate for your specific cancer type and stage.

Yes. Treatment is coordinated with your home oncologist. We can administer certain chemotherapy regimens at our hospital, and our integrative therapies such as hyperthermia are specifically designed to enhance the effectiveness of conventional chemotherapy while reducing its side effects.

Hyperthermia uses controlled heat to damage cancer cells, which are more sensitive to elevated temperatures than healthy cells. It also enhances the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, stimulates anti-tumor immune responses, and improves blood flow to tumor regions. We offer whole-body, local-regional, and prostate-specific hyperthermia systems.

A typical integrative oncology program lasts 2-4 weeks, depending on your cancer type, stage, and the treatment plan designed for your specific situation. Some patients return for additional treatment cycles. The duration is discussed and agreed upon before you begin your stay.
